Czech Grand - Canyon

Velká Amerika, or Great America , an abandoned limestone quarry is located near the village of Morina , in Central Bohemia in the

Czech Republic , just a few kilometers from Prague .

This is partly flooded elongated trench , which has today seductive photogenic " natural miracle of nature " and is included in the

attractions list the Czech Republic , was established as a result of human activity . the Czechs affectionately called this former quarry

Grand - Canyon of the Czech Republic .

1.  Mining work began to keep this region at the end of the 19th - century in response to the great demand for stone .

Limestone was used mainly in the industry , for the construction of blast furnaces for the production of pig iron in the production of glass ,

for the production of sugar from sugar beets .

Mining activity revived after world war I , quarry Morina became deeper and longer , until the quarry Velká Amerika not grown to 800 - meters

long and 100 - meters deep . when , in 1963 , the production of stone is stopped , the rain water gradually filled pit , forming a real lake

at the bottom of the canyon .
