Ladder King of Aragon is a stone staircase , carved in the vertical limestone cliff in the commune of Bonifacio , Corsica , France .

The staircase is located on a cliff , with a slope in 45 ° and consists of 187 steps . From the sea , it seems , it's just a dark oblique lines .

According to the legend , the staircase was carved in the rock forces the King of Aragon Alfonso V for one night during an unsuccessful

siege of Bonifacio in 1420 year .

In fact, a ladder descending to natural sources and the cave , located on the lower stairs , and , believed , was knocked out of the rock  

monks - the Franciscans long before , the troops of Alfonso the V, tried to storm the Bonifacio .

Some scholars argue ,   that the first step on the stairs have been carved in the Neolithic period , and has since been constantly

expanded and lengthened .
