The chapel bridge is the oldest wooden bridge in Europe, one of the main attractions of Switzerland and a symbol of the city of Lucerne.

The length of the bridge is 204.70 m.

It's hard to say exactly when it was founded. Historians believe that in Roman times or even earlier, in the place where the river Reuss flows from Lake Lucerne, a small settlement already existed. Monastery of St. Leodegar IM Hof was founded at the beginning of the 8th century, and the first recorded mention of it belongs to 840 a year. Around the bridge over the Reuss (Rojsbrûkke) the Central monastery with South hamlets grew over time, trade village, covering a pretty important place in the region. In 1178, the parish moved from the monastery of St. Leodegar IM Hof to Lucerne, and it is this Act of history and is considered as the Act of Foundation of the town.

Being the first city to join the Swiss Confederation, Lucerne has long held a special place in it, that, along with the successful geographical location of the city, it would seem, was to make it the capital of Switzerland. However, the canton of Lucerne was headed by Zonderbund, the victim in the year 1847 defeat, and its inhabitants in the year 1848 had voted against the adoption of the Federal Constitution, so the capital of Switzerland became, in the end, Bern. Thus, Lucerne lost in the middle of the 19th century its influence and importance in the political sense, but later, due to the development of tourism, the city became a cultural center of Switzerland.
