일주일전 유럽 전역에서 기록을 깨뜨린 열파로 그린란드로 유입된 최근의 비수기 온난한 기온은 전국의 82%를 차지하는 빙상의 

용융을 가속화하여 기록적인 속도로 물을 방출하고 있다. 

워싱턴 포스트 National Snow and Ice Data Center의 선임 연구원Ted Scambos에 따르면, 목요일에만 약 125억 톤의 용융수가 

바다로 흘러 들어와 1950년 이래 가장 높은 일일 총량이 될 것이라고 워싱턴 포스트는 보도했다. 

그린란드에서는 매년 여름 눈과 얼음이 녹으며 이 열파는 비정상적인 사건이었지만, 기후학자들은 전반적인 온난화 추세가 이러한 

사건을 심화시키고 앞으로 몇년안에 더 많은 가능성을 만들어 낼 것이라고 경고한다. 

AP통신은 2019년 6월 연구를 인용해 "그린란드에서만 얼음이 녹아 2100년까지 전 세계 해수면이 상승할 때 5~33센티미터(2~13인치)

가 추가될 것"이라고 밝혔다.

Eqip Sermia is approximately 350 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, and while the calving of ice from its face is a natural process

 going back millions of years, the glacier's retreat of about three kilometers over the past 100 years is a new phenomenon.

 While the heat wave broke in western Europe after a few days late last month, the extreme temperatures shifted north and 

caused massive ice melts in Greenland and the Arctic, according to Ruth Mottram, a climate scientist with the Danish Meteorological 

Institute.
